Caitlin here.
If you've taken my yoga class recently, you've probably heard me talk about the lungs and their association with the season of fall.
In Chinese medicine, fall is closely associated with the lungs, which makes this season a perfect time to focus on respiratory health. As the weather starts to cool down, our lungs can become more susceptible to dryness and environmental changes, so it’s essential to take care of them. Incorporating practices like deep breathing, humming and drinking hot tea can help nourish our lungs as the weather becomes drier and cooler. This season is also associated with the idea of letting go, much like trees shedding their leaves. It’s a reminder for us to release what no longer serves us—emotionally and physically. So, I invite you to spend a few minutes this week meditating on this idea of letting go of what no longer serves you. As you breathe and reflect on this, identify what you want to release (the exhale) and what you want to bring into your life (the inhale). Let your breath be a reminder of this intention.
Another great way to nourish your lungs this season is through the practice of breathwork. Breathwork is one of those hidden gems in yoga that can have a huge impact on your health and well-being. When you focus on your breath, you're not just taking in oxygen; you're also expanding your lung capacity. Deep, controlled breathing helps deliver more oxygen to your cells, making you feel more energized and alert. Plus, with regular practice, you'll notice an increased capacity to deal with life's stressful, anxiety-inducing situations. But it’s not just about the physical benefits—breathwork can work wonders for your mental health, too! When you practice deep breathing, you're tapping into mindfulness, which allows you to be present in each moment. Activating the parasympathetic nervous system through breathwork helps reduce stress levels, making you feel more grounded and centered. It's almost like hitting the reset button for your mind and emotions, which can be a game-changer when things feel chaotic and overwhelming.
In yoga, when you consciously sync your breath with movement, you become more attuned to how your body feels, bringing a new level of awareness to your practice. This connection can help you release any negative thought patterns or stuck energy in your system, paving the way for personal growth and a healthier you. If you come to my class tonight, expect to see breathwork sprinkled through our class. I invite you to lean into it, and to allow your system to feel its benefits.
See you in class!
